The Hutong Project

The Hutongs are the alleyways between courtyards where people live in the Beijing City. They’re rich in culture and history — regarded as one of the icons of Beijing. I certainly did not see that at first.

Why Hutongs?

Narrow alleyways, public bathrooms, sharing courtyards with strangers — the Hutongs are not comfortable living spaces.

“The hutongs are the skeleton, while the flesh and blood, are the people who live here”

Mr. Ma

What is Culture?

Culture. It is a word we say easily, but it always seems to hold more weight than it first appears. It can mean history, tradition, or something harder to explain – it can mean the concept of “culture” itself, something ambiguous.
